Living Eucharist

The Gospel Acclamation for Corpus Christi offered a concise and compelling reminder of what lies at the heart of the Mystery which the feast celebrates: God works for our eternal well-being.

Alleluia, alleluia!
I am the living bread which has come down from heaven,
says the Lord.
Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.

His action requires our response, but the humility and generosity of his action – when it is recognised – almost compels us to respond aright. It does not detract from our free will. But as their hunger draws the hungry to food, so divine love and life draw those marked by sin and death to Him who possesses them entirely and who shares them so freely.

  • How, today, will you ‘eat this bread’?
  • How today will you begin, again, to live eternal life?
