In addition to the regular times for people to come to church to make their confession, local churches offer penitential services that allow us to come together to celebrate the sacrament as a community.
The format is very simple. We begin with a hymn, listen to scripture, reflect on its meaning for us, examine our conscience, and then go to make our individual (private) confessions. Usually there are a number of priests present, so usually there is some choice as to which priest you go to.
The form is especially suited for families with younger children, providing an opportunity for the children making their second and third confessions to have the support of their family and parish.
It is helpful also for the children preparing for Confirmation, to come to celebrate the Sacrament together with their parents, seeing its importance for them as a family at this special time of the year.
