inYou know ‘the time’ has come: you must wake up now: our salvation is even nearer than it was when we were converted. The night is almost over, it will be daylight soon – let us give up all the things we prefer to do under cover of the dark; let us arm ourselves and appear in the light. Let us live decently as people do in the daytime: no drunken orgies, no promiscuity or licentiousness, and no wrangling or jealousy. Let your armour be the Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 13:11-14
The second reading of Sunday, the first Sunday of Advent, reminds that as we approach the darkest days of the year the Church looks backwards for her inspiration in moving forwards. The dawn is a potent symbol for the season of Advent, a time of waiting for darkness to be dispelled, for the sun to rise and shadows to disappear.

The fruit of silence is prayer.
The fruit of prayer is faith.
The fruit of faith is love.
The fruit of love is service.
The fruit of service is peace.
These words of St Teresa of Calcutta are a reminder of the importance of silence. The Liturgy Committee of the Department for Christian Life and Worship has produced a document The Place of Silence which explores how silence is an integral part of any liturgical action. It looks, in particular, at the celebration of Mass and how silence is expected in different ways.
Archbishop Bernard has written to the clergy of the archdiocese advising that:
The Season of Advent is a good time to introduce or reintroduce a greater commitment to the value of silence at points in our celebration of Mass, and by way of a prayerful preparation before Mass, in our parish churches, schools, chaplaincies and religious chapels.
At St Nick’s this is something we have been working on with readers and musicians for a while now, but it will be good to reflect on this new guidance and to see what more we might given some attention to.
Graphic from here.

inThe vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
In the days to come
the mountain of the Temple of the Lord
shall tower above the mountains
and be lifted higher than the hills.
All the nations will stream to it,
peoples without number will come to it; and they will say:‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the Temple of the God of Jacob
that he may teach us his ways
so that we may walk in his paths;
since the Law will go out from Zion,
and the oracle of the Lord from Jerusalem.’He will wield authority over the nations
and adjudicate between many peoples;
these will hammer their swords into ploughshares,
their spears into sickles.
Nation will not lift sword against nation,
there will be no more training for war.O House of Jacob, come,
let us walk…

inThe season of Advent began yesterday with the first Sunday of Advent.
The Preface used at Mass yesterday and which will be used for all Masses until 16th December that have no proper Preface.
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord. For he assumed at his first coming
the lowliness of human flesh,
and so fulfilled the design you formed long ago,
and opened for us the way to eternal salvation,
that, when he comes again in glory and majesty
and all is at last made manifest,
we who watch for that day
may inherit the great promise
in which now we dare to hope. And so, with Angels and Archangels,
with Thrones and Dominions,
and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven,
we sing the hymn…

inThis Christmas we invite you to come home and experience the welcome of your Catholic community. Come and receive the warm family welcome of returning home for Christmas where there is already a place waiting for you.
Many of us fall away from the Church, but whatever your reasons or situation, why not take a fresh look? You are invited to take this first step, at your own pace and in your own time.
This might be simply to find a Catholic church and go inside. Perhaps you might sit and enjoy the peace and quiet. You might want to light a candle and say a prayer for a loved one. Is there a friend or family member that might come with you to Mass?
If you want to come to us here in Boldmere, you will be very welcome. Details of our services for Christmas are here.
But you can find details of all parishes in Birmingham Archdiocese here… Details of their Christmas services will be posted on their website in the coming days, if they are not there already.

inI rejoiced when I heard them say: ‘Let us go to God’s house.’
I rejoiced when I heard them say:
‘Let us go to God’s house.’
And now our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.I rejoiced when I heard them say: ‘Let us go to God’s house.’
It is there that the tribes go up,
the tribes of the Lord.
For Israel’s law it is,
there to praise the Lord’s name.
There were set the thrones of judgement
of the house of David.I rejoiced when I heard them say: ‘Let us go to God’s house.’
For the peace of Jerusalem pray:
‘Peace be to your homes!
May peace reign in your walls,
in your palaces, peace!’I rejoiced when I heard them say: ‘Let us go to God’s house.’
For love of my brethren and friends
I say: ‘Peace upon you!’
For love of the house…
